Pixle.sgIt is difficult to avoid staring at a computer screen these days. Especially so if your work relies on the use of a computer. The problem is, flicker monitors can be harmful to our eyes. Is there anything you can do to minimize the harm and maintain the health of your eyes in the long term?

The good news is, yes. A flicker-free monitor can help to protect your eyes. In this post, we delve further into the issue.

How Computer Screens Harm Our Eyes

Most computer monitors today have LED backlighting. The LED backlighting enhances the screen’s definition, brilliance, clarity, contrast, as well as graphics. It emits blue light waves. These waves radiate at a brighter intensity than natural light does.

The problem is, our eyes are not equipped to filter out and protect against intense blue light. As a result, exposure to blue light can be harmful to our eyes. Consistent exposure to blue light can cause dryness, fatigue, irritation, and Computer Vision Syndrome.

Considering how harmful intense blue light can be, it is a good idea to get a monitor with Low Blue Light Technology. A monitor that has this feature still emits blue light but not as intense as regular monitors do. Thus, minimizing the harm to your eyes.

What Is Flicker and Why Is It Harmful?

The blue light that monitors emit is not the only thing that can harm our eyes. On-screen flicker can do that, too. But what exactly is flicker?

Monitors with LED backlighting flicker through what is known as pulse-width modulation or PWM, which allows you to adjust the screen brightness with ease. PWM turns the LED backlight on and off quickly at a steady rate. This, in turn, reduces the screen brightness.

That sounds like a good thing, right? Not exactly. Here’s the problem: a screen flickers very, very quickly. It is so quick that our eyes cannot perceive it. This flicker causes our pupils to change size from larger to smaller quickly. This causes various eye health issues, including eye fatigue and eye strain.

Want to check if your current monitor is flicker-free or not? Try these:

  1. Set its brightness to maximum.
  2. Grab your smartphone and turn on the camera facing the monitor.
  3. Lower the brightness to 50% and slowly until it is 0%.

As the brightness lowers, the flicker becomes more and more noticeable if your monitor is not flicker-free.

The Flicker-free Solution

Fortunately, there are flicker-free monitors out there. Keep in mind that not all flicker-free monitors are really flicker-free. Some monitors flicker so fast they seem flicker-free. Instead of using flicker-free technology, these monitors flicker even fast so they don’t look flickering at all.
