Setting the Primary and Secondary Monitors

Let’s start with setting the primary and secondary monitors first.

  1. Start from your desktop.
  2. Right-click on the desktop. Scroll down and select “Display.” A dialogue box will be opened.
  3. At the top, you should see blue, numbered boxes. Each one of these boxes represents an available monitor.
  4. Select the monitor that you want to be the main display or primary monitor.
  5. Find the “Make this my main display” box and check it. When you check this box, the other monitor will automatically become the secondary monitor.
  6. When you are finished, click “Apply”.

Setting the Resolutions

Once the primary and secondary monitor has been set up, the next thing to do is to set the resolutions.

  1. Start from your desktop.
  2. Right-click on the desktop. Scroll down and select “Display.”
  3. From the Display menu, select the monitor that you want to adjust.
  4. Scroll down to the bottom of the dialogue box and find “Advanced display settings.” Click it.
  5. Click “Resolution”. Find the resolution you want and click it.
  6. When you are finished, click “Apply.”

Setting the Display Style

To set up the display style of your monitors, follow the steps below.

  1. Start from your desktop.
  2. Right-click on the desktop. Scroll down and select “Display”.
  3. Find the “Multiple displays” drop-down menu. Click it. You will see the following options.
  • Duplicate these displays. If you select this option, the secondary monitor will mirror the primary monitor display.
  • Extend these displays.  This option expands the desktop across each monitor.
  • Show only 1. When you select this option, the monitor “2” will be disabled. Your computer will only use monitor “1”.
  • Show only 2. The opposite of the previous option. This option disables monitor “1” and the computer will only use monitor “2”.
  1. When you are finished, click “Apply.”

Setting the Positions

Lastly, setting up the monitors’ positions. Here’s how to do it.

  1. Start from your desktop.
  2. Right-click on the desktop. Scroll down and select “Display.”
  3. Check the blue, numbered boxes that represent your monitors. If you want the mouse to be able to scroll from left to right across the monitors, monitor “1” needs to be on the left while monitor “2” needs to be on the right.
  4. To change the position of the monitors, just click the blue, numbered box that you want to reposition. Then, drag the box to the position you want it to be.
  5. When you are finished, click “Apply.”
